Charing Cross

02/19/2007 | Charing Cross

Phil and Louise outside Charing Cross Station. This was Peter and Louise's first day out in London. A bit jet lagged.

The name originates from the hamlet of Charing, where King Edward I placed a cross in memorial to his wife, Eleanor of Castile. It is officially recognised as the centre of London; distances to London are measured to the location of the original Eleanor cross built at Charing.

The one in the photo is a Victorian replacement - kinda similiar but more ornate than the original.
